How does laser tattoo removal work?
When a tattoo is applied, a needle inserts ink into the deepest layer of skin, the dermis, where it remains trapped. Immediately upon insertion, your body's immune system detects the ink particles as foreign substances and continuously sends macrophages to remove them. This is why tattoos become faded and lose color over many years. The reason tattoos are permanent is because the ink particles are too large and too deep to be removed by the macrophages. In order to get rid of these ink particles, they must first be broken into smaller fragments.
Laser tattoo removal helps speed up the fading process by emitting ultra-short pulses of light energy into the skin. The wavelengths of light pass through the top layers of skin and into the dermis where the ink is embedded. The ink particles absorb the light energy, heat up, and shatter into smaller ink fragments that are then naturally flushed out by the body's immune system. Over a series of treatments, the laser will continue to break up the ink particles and your tattoo will fade more and more until no ink is visible.
